A loved Auntie

Auntie Elsie has been a constant in my life since I was born in 1960. I used to enjoy going to visit Auntie Elsie, and she had many stories of her early life living on the farm and enjoying the cinema. I will miss those stories.

She loved her family and devoted her life to caring for her Mother and the her batchelor brother. She did this willingly and with no complaints.

She led an interesting life, living on the farm, rescuing her sister when she skated on the icy pond, making friends during the war and having a career as a head cook.

During the war, she was in the WAAF and met her lifelong friend Dorothy. The picture is of Elsie in her WAAF uniform holding her nephew Deryck. Later that day a bomb made a direct hit on her home, killing her nephew and one of her brothers.

In the photo Elsie has her typical smile, and despite the tragedy of that day she continued to smile through her life, particularly in later years.
